Funding: $1 million, plus the Cadieux match

Preaching is a hallmark practice for Protestant churches. It has always been important to form preachers who can, with faith and imagination, bridge between the world of the text and the world of the congregation.

The Rev. Dr. Fred Craddock, a Phillips alumnus (1953) and former faculty member, has became one of the best-known preachers and teachers of preachers of his generation. In addition, few people have shaped the field of preaching theory and practice more than Fred. Author of numerous books, speaker and preacher at countless events, Fred is the Bandy Distinguished Professor of Preaching and New Testament Emeritus at Candler School of Theology, and Director Emeritus of the Craddock Center in Cherry Log, GA.

When we asked Fred about his thoughts and feelings on a chair in his name at PTS, he replied:

Well, it’s rather awesome … I’m very much honored by it. I can’t think of any school that would make this available to me, and I would have this much gratitude and strong emotional feeling as I do. I say this because I’ve had a long association with Phillips, in the shaping of my life in seminary and in my efforts to teach.

It is a tremendous honor for Phillips Theological Seminary for Fred to say “yes” to a preaching chair in his name. Furthermore, it will be a great day when PTS can say to the church and the academy that generations of preachers will be educated by a professor whose position is funded in perpetuity by an endowed chair in Fred’s name.
